London Transport Museum & The Association of Illustrators Competition
London Transport Museum, in partnership with the Association of Illustrators (AOI), is delighted to announce that submissions are now welcome for the 2012 Serco Prize for Illustration.
This year the theme is Secret London. Entrants are asked to create an illustration that explores a hidden side to the city.
Entries can depict little known or unusual aspects of the Capital’s history, culture, characters and communities – past or present.
This is an exciting challenge for artists to celebrate a vibrant, multi-layered London in a way it has never been seen before.
The competition is open to students and illustrators throughout the world. The top 50 entries selected by a panel of judges will be displayed in an exhibition at London Transport Museum that will open Tuesday 13 November and run until Monday 10 December 2012.
The winners will be announced at a private award ceremony on the evening of Monday 12 November 2012.
The winning entry will appear on Transport for London services as a poster and prizes will be awarded in three levels:
First prize: £2000
Second prize: £1000
Third prize: £750
The deadline for entries is 5.00pm on Friday 6 April 2012.
The Serco Prize for Illustration continues Transport for London’s legacy of design that dates back over 100 years. The Museum’s collection of graphic art is one of the best in the world and includes over 5,000 posters and artworks by famous artists including Man Ray, Paul Nash and Edward McKnight Kauffer.
This is the third year that Serco, who operate the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme, Docklands Light Railway and the Woolwich Ferry, has supported the competition. All these transport modes provide an opportunity to discover some of the Capital’s ‘secrets’.

How to present Artwork to Creatives Inc: A quick guide!
In order for us to get the best out of your collection, here is a basic outline of how you can make our clients stop & take notice!
Think about what it is that will make your designs sell.
1: Be prepared to wear 2 hats…one for your artistic output, and one for commercial purposes. Try not to send us just a link to your website, often, artwork is dispersed over many pages and it is difficult to make an initial assessment. If your website is split into specific areas – direct us to what you would like us to look at.
2: Group designs in batches of 6 with a common thread if possible – this gives us a good idea if a collection can be created whether it be Greetings cards, clothing etc…If its a 2 or 3D design and not a digitally created image, good close up photographs are a must.
3: Send us low-res jpegs for the website porfolio – max 800px wide. Include a 950 x 500 px image f your link into your porfolio. Pick your brightest or most commercial image.
4: You can also send an A4 PDF with your designs already laid out. If we need to print anything out for a portfolio or for a sample, we will ask for a hi-res image [300 dpi].
5: A brief biography about yourself – let us know what your influences are, make it fun or serious. We want to getyour message across.
We want to work with you in a transparent manner – so we have created a basic agreement in advance of any work being used or requested etc

We aren’t hard taskmasters, we want to support your entry into the world of commerce, so here are some words of advice!
Always put a Copyright disclaimer on your website or whenever you submit designs to publishers. Also take advice on what happens to your copyright when you sell artwork on…I found this US article fairly relevent even for the UK. We at Creatives Inc will always try to ensure you keep your copyright where possble.
Join a relevant association like the Association of illustrators etc. And especially LinkedIn – they have lots of groups you can join and ask stupid questions without being laughed at! I learn something everyday from my peers there. Its not just for fusty old business people like me. I have met some key people through it.
Make sure your portfolio if you are a new graduate is up on the Artsthread website – a lot of business use this site to search out talent.
Be the next big thing @ Levi’s
Times are tight I guess and Levi’s have found a cheap way of looking out for the next big thing. But hey – hopefully using this new way of crowdsourcing they’ll try something different, or someone different than the usual faces.
To date – its looking a bit sparse so the world is your oyster to create & inspire…don’t be dull now, most of them are so far. Go kick their denim asses!
Using Instagram & Twitter, get yourself loaded using the hashtag #iamlevis

Creative Catalyst: Design For Change Competition
Want to use your designs for a good cause? Creative Catalyst lets you do just that. Design a piece to support an issue of your choice and you could win a £2000 donation as well as your design displayed in Berlin and London with a Computer Arts Magazine profile and double page spread.
Your work will be judged by an international panel of design luminaries.
As creative people your ideas are your greatest commodity. This is a chance to use those skills to raise awareness or promote a cause you really believe in.
Globally there are hundreds of non-profit organisations and under-represented issues that need help getting their messages out. Ranging across environmental, social and economic concerns they often struggle for attention and can have difficulty being heard. So let’s play our part and give them a stronger voice.
We would like you to design a piece for a cause that greatly matters to you – no restrictions on topic but a social focus is mandatory (meaning something that impacts on people in whatever way).
The final work will be visually engaging and clear-messaged. Best of luck!

New Designers 2011: The week so far…
We had a fabulous first week meeting so many new designers who have been working on textiles, wallpaper, jewellery and ceramics! I hope to share them with you very soon! I have a plethora of business cards and postcards from an amazing mix of people keen to try out their designs on new product and now I have the job of going through them all!
Our little Garden of Eden attracted some interesting characters with new products going into development. It has been a great sounding board from students, the public & retailers to see what is drawing people to particular designs.
The atmosphere has been great fun, and the presentations from those working to support graduates has been fantastic. We also had a visit from Art Royalty – Gilbert & George. I couldnt get them to agree to design any teatowels….I’m sure they could come up with some great babygrow ideas!
The second week kicks off tomorrow with those who have been studying in the field of Illustration, Graphic Design, Visual communication, Product & Furniture design. Our past successes here in finding great talent make us very proud to be sitting amongst the designers of tomorrow.
We are here until 6PM Saturday 9th July 2011….come and pay us a visit on the 2nd floor.
Wellcome Trust Arts Awards
The Wellcome Trust are a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. Arts Awards support imaginative and experimental arts projects that investigate biomedical science.
The scheme aims to:
stimulate interest, excitement and debate about biomedical science through the arts
examine the social, cultural, and ethical impact of biomedical science
support formal and informal learning
encourage new ways of thinking
encourage high quality interdisciplinary practice and collaborative partnerships in arts, science and/or education practice.
All art forms are covered by the programme: dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. The Trust invites applications for projects which engage adult audiences and/or young people.
Background
We believe the arts are an effective way of stimulating debate and engaging people with biomedical science. Visual art, music, moving image, creative writing and performance can reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. Collaborative and interdisciplinary practice across the arts and sciences can help to provide new perspectives on both fields. The arts can also provide imaginative ways of engaging and educating young people in the field of science.
The scheme is open to a wide range of people including, among others, artists, scientists, curators, filmmakers, writers, producers, directors, academics, science communicators, teachers, arts workers and education officers.
Applicants must be based in the UK or the Republic of Ireland and the activity must take place in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.
Applicants are usually affiliated to organisations, but can apply as individuals.
Organisations might include: museums and other cultural attractions; arts agencies; production companies; arts venues; broadcast media; schools; local education authorities; universities and colleges; youth clubs; community groups; research institutes; the NHS; and science centres.
Partnership projects (between different people and organisations, e.g. scientists and ethicists, educators and artists) are welcomed.
If this is the first time an organisation is applying to the Wellcome Trust an eligibility assessment will be carried out. For this assessment, the following documentation from the applying organisation should be submitted:
articles of association
audited accounts from the previous two years
details of similar projects/grant funding received
confirmation that no funding has been received or is scheduled to be received from any tobacco company.
Funding can be applied for at two levels:
Small to medium-sized projects (up to and including £30 000)
Funding can either be used to support the development of new project ideas, deliver small-scale productions or workshops, investigate and experiment with new methods of engagement through the arts, or develop new collaborative relationships between artists and scientists.
Applicants can apply for any amount within the above boundaries, for projects lasting a maximum of three years.
For small to medium-sized projects (up to and including £30 000) upcoming deadlines are:
28 October 2011
27 January 2012
Decisions will be made approximately three months after the relevant deadline.
For large projects (above £30 000) the deadline for 2011 has passed.
We are currently reviewing our process for large projects for 2012. This page will be updated at the end of September 2011 with further details.
Decisions will be made approximately six months after the deadline.
